If you have suffered physical or psychological harm as a result of a violent crime or sexual abuse within the last two years, you may be entitled to compensation through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA). The amount awarded depends on the severity and impact of your injury.

Who Can Claim?

The CICA operates on behalf of the Government to provide financial compensation to innocent victims of crime. Importantly, you may still be eligible to claim even if:

• Your attacker has not been convicted, or
• You do not know who your attacker is.

Reporting to the Police

Before making a claim, the incident must be reported to the police and a statement provided. You do not need to wait for a conviction to begin your claim. In fact, waiting could put your right to compensation at risk, as the CICA enforces strict time limits.

For historic sexual abuse claims, you must first report the abuse to the police. Once reported, you have up to two years to begin your claim.

Medical Evidence

The CICA may require medical evidence to support your case. We can assist you in obtaining this evidence or help you attend a medical examination arranged directly by the CICA at a time and place that is convenient for you.

Timescales for Claims

CICA cases can take time due to the high volume of applications they process. Typically, claims may take up to 12 months to resolve, though more complex cases may take longer. Straightforward cases, however, can sometimes be settled much sooner.

If you are still undergoing treatment or your recovery is ongoing, the CICA will usually wait until your condition stabilises before making a final award. In the meantime, we can help you apply for interim payments to ease any financial pressure.
